MY ROLE
Lead UI Designer
Business Problem
Climate Reality’s Chicago Chapter wants to find a tool to put into the hands of everyday people to motivate them to act in ways that are kind to the environment and minimize their contribution to climate change.
Solution
I worked with Climate Reality’s Chicago Chapter to create an app that can track habits and provide proof to users that their habits do make an impact.
The Process
Survey Findings
Through the survey, it was clear that over 90% cared about climate change and felt powerless, despite developing/executing their habits to help mitigate it.
Some users' most significant roadblocks to keeping up with their habits are Money, Convenience, and Time.
Interview Findings
I interviewed 6 survey respondents, and here are some common takeaways:

-
4:6 actively try to keep up with habits to help mitigate climate change, but it can be difficult.
-
5:6 felt hopeless and discouraged about their habits having any real impact.
-
5:6 felt climate change issues should be on those in power in the government and big corporations.
Meet the User
With commonalities emerging, I created a persona.
Nancy (a busy millennial) needs to stay motivated to keep up with (or to develop) habits that help mitigate climate change so that she can stop feeling hopeless about whether her actions make a difference or not.
Solution Hypothesis
Nancy needs easy challenges which are simple and achievable so that she can see progress & the positive impact it has on climate change
Since Climate Reality’s next steps were to create a mobile app to be more feasible to everyday users, that is the direction our team decided to go in.
Product Features
For a minimum viable product (MVP) that would relieve Nancy’s frustrations and enhance her overall experience, I focused on the following features:

-
Notifications of weekly challenge
-
Ability to see progress/impact
-
Positive feedback
-
Ability to share progress
^Here is an example of prioritizing other features.
User Flow
Let’s say that Nancy has downloaded the Climate Reality app, and it is Monday. She will want to begin this week's challenge and keep track of her progress.
Wireframes
After synthesizing the research and coming up with possible solutions, I started building out the foundations of the product I was envisioning.
-
An easy and approachable layout that is direct.
-
Visual representations of challenge and progress.
-
Plenty of positive feed back for encouragement.
Prototype
For the prototype,
-
I kept in mind the color scheme of the logo and represented that throughout the app.
-
The habit tracker provides simple and fun challenges to make it easy on the user to accept and encourage them to follow through with the challenges.
-
The app provides positive feed back throughout the journey of the challenge (especially on the last day) to keep users feeling good.
-
On the last day, users can see the collected results of their actions as a community in Chicago. This proves impact and creates a sense of accomplishment.
-
Users can then rate the challenge to give feedback to the organization.
Next Steps
If I were to move forward with this project, I would first want to conduct Usability Tests to ensure the concept makes sense to the users, is enjoyable, and sees how it makes them feel.
-
Petitions page and functionality
-
Apply other features such as links to other groups and an articles button/feature
-
Proof of concept tests
